Unconventional AI confirms its massive $475M seed round
What Happened
Led by Naveen Rao, the former head of AI at Databricks, the new hardware startup is valued at $4.5 billion.
Our Take
Naveen Rao + $475M at seed on hardware is either genius or the dumbest money move of 2026. There's no middle ground. They're building chips (long sales cycles, manufacturing nightmares, capital black hole), not software. One exceptional founder doesn't fix those constraints.
The size of the round suggests either: (a) there's a breakthrough in training efficiency they're hiding, or (b) VCs learned nothing from 2022. I'm betting on (a), but I'm not excited until they ship something real. Vaporware at $4.5B doesn't impress me.
What To Do
Wait for their actual product architecture before deciding if the valuation makes sense.
