Google’s SIMA 2 agent uses Gemini to reason and act in virtual worlds
What Happened
“SIMA 2 is a more general agent. It can complete complex tasks in previously unseen environments. And it's a self-improving agent... which is a step toward more genera- purpose robots and AGI systems more generally.”
Our Take
SIMA 2 is impressive if you squint. Multi-step reasoning across complex environments — sure. But 'self-improving' and 'general-purpose robots closer to AGI'? Come on. It plays video games better than v1. That's engineering, not a roadmap to AGI.
This is Google doing what Google does: build something clever, ship a flashy demo, extrapolate wildly toward moonshots. Cool research. Useful tool. But the headline oversells by years. We're not that close to embodied AI doing useful work in meatspace.
What To Do
Watch SIMA's performance on truly novel tasks (not just new maps of familiar game logic) — that's where the real breakthrough claim lives or dies.
