What Happened

After reaching $1 billion in annualized revenue, Anysphere CEO Michael Truell explained the features his company is focused on building out.

Our Take

Cursor's hitting $1B ARR because they're solving a specific problem (code in your editor) better than commodity LLM companies can. They're not trying to be Claude. That focus matters.

But don't confuse winning a niche with being safe. OpenAI's been distracted with o1 and reasoning while Cursor shipped keyboard shortcuts and local models. That gives them maybe 18 months of breathing room. Once Copilot gets the Cursor treatment (and it will), their moat shrinks fast. Features copy in weeks. Data and specialization don't.

What To Do

Their survival depends on proprietary training data or repo-specific models—not on features OpenAI can ship in a quarterly update.
