↗What Happened
The Trump administration formalized its 25% cut of H200 chip sales in China with a tariff that applies to certain semiconductors.
Our Take
The tariff makes H200s 25% more expensive for China-bound exports, which sounds like a win until you realize it props up Nvidia prices globally. Chip shortage playbook: restrict supply, everyone pays more.
China will switch to domestic chips or AMD faster, which means less vendor lock-in, not less AI. The tech spreads.
For us building AI products: expect infrastructure costs to stay inflated. Nvidia knows they're the only game in town for serious training. Don't expect that to change.
What To Do
Lock in compute contracts now before prices spike further.
