Uber is the latest to be won over by Amazon’s AI chips

What Happened

Uber is expanding its AWS contract to run more of its ride-sharing features on Amazon's chips. This is a thumb-of-the nose at Oracle and Google.

Our Take

Uber switching to Amazon chips isn't a vote of confidence in AWS AI strategy. It's Uber being cheap. Amazon's chips work fine and cost maybe 20-30% less than NVIDIA alternatives. Uber's already locked into AWS anyway, so vendor lock-in's a non-issue.

This is economics, not innovation. Uber doesn't care about chip architectures — they care about cents per inference. Amazon wins on cost, not performance.

What To Do

For large-scale inference, AWS Trainium/Inferentia will undercut NVIDIA on price, but not performance.
