Target joins OpenAI’s growing list of retail apps
What Happened
OpenAI is pushing deeper into retail, with Target set to debut a new ChatGPT-powered app for shoppers. The app is launching in beta next week.
Our Take
This is pure marketing. Shopping assistance isn't new—Target's had search, filters, recommendations for years. Slapping ChatGPT on top doesn't solve the real problem: people know what they want, or they don't. A chatbot saying 'blue shirts in aisle 7' isn't innovation. It's a search box with extra steps.
Will novelty drive adoption? Maybe for a week. Real value depends on execution—is it actually faster than their existing app? Six months out, if engagement is flat, OpenAI gets the headline while Target eats the cost.
What To Do
Check Target's app engagement 90 days post-launch; if usage doesn't move, this was a feature, not a product.
