Sequoia to invest in Anthropic, breaking VC taboo on backing rivals: FT

What Happened

Venture capital firms have historically avoided backing competing companies in the same sector, preferring to place their bets on a single winner. Yet here's Sequoia, already invested in both OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI, now throwing its weight behind Anthropic, too.

Our Take

Not principle-breaking, it's portfolio hedging dressed up as news. Sequoia's already won with OpenAI. Anthropic's the insurance policy in case Claude eats ChatGPT's lunch. Backing both isn't bold, it's capital allocation.

VCs fund winners, not principles. OpenAI's already massive—upside is mathematically capped relative to risk. Anthropic's smaller, hungrier, different technical approach. If one stumbles you've got the other.

Only interesting bit: Sequoia thinks LLM competition's actually durable and worth this much capital. Single-winner markets don't get hedged this way.

What To Do

Stop reading VC moves as ethical statements; it's capital allocation, full stop.
