OpenAI’s plans to make ChatGPT more like Amazon aren’t going so well
What Happened
OpenAI says it's moving away from Instant Checkout, which allowed users to buy items directly through the ChatGPT interface.
Our Take
Instant Checkout is dead because it was always a terrible idea. People don't want to buy stuff through a chatbot. They want the chatbot to be good at chat.
OpenAI saw a distribution channel and got greedy. Scope creep is how products get bloated and die. ChatGPT can barely stay on topic; adding commerce features was just adding surface area for failure.
The smart move: get back to competence at one thing. Let integrations handle commerce if someone's dumb enough to click "buy" on a ChatGPT suggestion.
Focus wins.
What To Do
Avoid adding "cool integrations" to your core product until users are begging for them; usually they won't.
