What Happened

Merge Labs is a “research lab” dedicated to “bridging biological and artificial intelligence to maximize human ability.” OpenAI wrote the largest check in Merge Labs' $250 million seed round at an $850 million valuation.

Our Take

Sam leaves OpenAI to start Merge Labs (brain-computer interface company), OpenAI immediately writes the biggest check in the seed round. That's not an investment, that's a golden parachute wrapped in venture math.

BCIs *are* the future interface layer for AI, no argument there. But Merge Labs is 5-10 years away from anything production. They're building the sci-fi, not the product.

For us: unless you're hiring neuroscience PhDs, this doesn't change your stack this year. But yeah, screens are eventually done. Know that now.

What To Do

Keep BCIs on your radar as an interaction layer for 2030+, don't chase it today.
