OpenAI board member Larry Summers steps down amid Epstein file revelations
What Happened
Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has resigned from OpenAI’s board days after Congress released documents showing he was close friends with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Our Take
Look, Summers stepping down is just liability cleanup. Yeah, the Epstein stuff is terrible optics, but this doesn't fix OpenAI's actual governance problem. The board's still dominated by insiders, there's no real independent oversight, and one less person doesn't change that. It's corporate theater - sounds good, changes nothing.
And honestly, if proximity to Epstein was actually disqualifying, OpenAI should've done due diligence before hiring him, not after Congress made it awkward. This is retroactive ethics for PR purposes.
What To Do
Don't read board composition changes as governance improvements—they're PR moves.
