Moxie Marlinspike has a privacy-conscious alternative to ChatGPT
What Happened
Confer is designed to look and feel like ChatGPT or Claude, but your conversations can't be used for training or advertising.
Our Take
Privacy as pitch is dead. Nobody switches to a new ChatGPT clone because you don't train on conversations. They switch if it's faster, cheaper, or better at something specific.
Moxie's credible in crypto/privacy circles. That's maybe 2% of ChatGPT's user base. Signal's been privacy-first for years. So have five other chat apps. Whole graveyard of ideologically pure products nobody uses.
Confer might win on UX or dominate a niche (math, code, research?). But privacy won't be why. Privacy's just the decoration on whatever actually makes it useful.
What To Do
Test Confer for a specific task, not for ideology.
