What Happened

The abrupt change in personnel was in the works for several weeks, according to an OpenAI executive.

Our Take

Mira Murati quits OpenAI to start Thinking Machines Lab (research on AGI alignment). Five months later, two of her three cofounders go back to OpenAI. That's a slow-motion failure signal.

Either the startup wasn't viable, or OpenAI pulled strings (both possible). Talent consolidation around the big player is real.

For us: if your best people keep getting recruited by the incumbents, you've got a retention problem or a bad strategy problem. Sometimes both.

What To Do

If you're losing talent to competitors, ask whether you're chasing the same hype cycle or solving a different problem.
