What Happened

Google is upgrading its image generation model with new editing chops, higher resolutions, more accurate text rendering, and the ability to search the web.

Our Take

Honestly? This reads like Google catching up, not leapfrogging. Web search integration into image gen isn't novel—it's what you'd expect at this point. Higher res, better text rendering, editing tools—table stakes now, not differentiators.

What actually matters: Can Nano Banana Pro run inference cheap enough that it becomes the default for enterprises nervous about Midjourney's license ambiguity? If Google prices it at 50% of Midjourney's per-image cost, adoption velocity matters more than feature parity.

The real tell? "Latest model" language. That means previous ones got outflanked. This is Google's third or fourth swing at image gen. Eventually the ball connects, but they're not setting the pace.

What To Do

If you're locked into Midjourney for cost reasons, benchmark Google's API pricing this week—this could be your exit window.
