The European Commission is launching an antitrust investigation into Meta's move to ban other AI companies from using WhatsApp's business tools to offer their own AI chatbots to users.
Our Take
Meta's doing the dumbest version of platform lock-in. Banning OpenAI, Anthropic, Google from WhatsApp's business API so only Meta's chatbot works? That's not strategy, that's a fine waiting to happen. EU'll hand them €8–12B and a remediation order within 18 months.
The irony: Meta's own AI chatbot sucks and nobody wants it. They're protecting a corpse.
What To Do
If you're building a WhatsApp bot, assume Meta bans you eventually and build on Twilio or MessageBird instead.
