ChatGPT’s user growth has slowed, report finds
What Happened
ChatGPT's global monthly active users only grew by around 5% from August to November, while Gemini's users grew by about 30%.
Our Take
Gut: ChatGPT's growth hitting a wall while Gemini grows 6x faster looks bad until you remember most ChatGPT users are still free tier. OpenAI doesn't care about monthly actives—they care about paying customers and API usage. This headline confuses vanity metrics with actual business health.
That said, 5% growth for the category leader while competitors do 30% isn't a good look. It means people are bouncing between tools now instead of being loyal to ChatGPT. The default effect is wearing off.
For you: stop assuming ChatGPT dominance. Gemini, Claude, local models—all viable now. Your customer probably isn't married to OpenAI anymore.
What To Do
Audit your AI tooling—ChatGPT's grip on the market is loosening, so negotiate better contracts with competitors.
