Anthropic’s CEO stuns Davos with Nvidia criticism

Read the full articleAnthropic’s CEO stuns Davos with Nvidia criticism on TechCrunch

What Happened

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei unloaded on both the administration and U.S. chip companies over plans to sell to China. The criticism was particularly notable because one of those chipmakers, Nvidia, is a major partner and investor in Anthropic.

Our Take

That's ballsy, but also kind of hollow. Look, Amodei's right that the geopolitical chess is insane—we're training billion-dollar models on enemy chips while pretending to contain AI. But he only says this after Nvidia already cut the check. Easy to protest when you're funded.

The real story? This is performative independence. Anthropic needs the IC4 narrative ("we're the safety play") to justify staying independent. Criticizing Nvidia in front of Davos delegates costs nothing; it buys trust. Meanwhile they'll keep buying whatever h100s they can get.

What To Do

This changes nothing about chip availability—you're still competing with everyone for TSMC capacity.
