What Happened

Anthropic gave up its contract with the Pentagon over AI safety disagreements -- then, OpenAI swooped in.

Our Take

Anthropic took a principled stand and walked from Pentagon money. OpenAI took it. That's the actual difference — not messaging, not PR spin.

Anthropic's safer long-term if regulation tightens around military AI. But principles don't fund burn rate, and OpenAI's right that refusing defense contracts is a luxury smaller shops can't afford.

One takes moral high ground; the other pays their engineers. Both valid.
