Anthropic and the Pentagon are reportedly arguing over Claude usage
What Happened
The apparent issue: whether Claude can be used for mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons.
Our Take
Gut: Anthropic's hitting the wall between 'responsible AI' marketing and actual state power. You can't win both.
They've got constitutional AI, policy statements, safety training—then a sovereign government asks: 'Can we use this for mass surveillance and drone targeting?' What's the leverage? Say no, lose Pentagon contracts. Say yes, nuke your brand.
Here's the thing: once the model's deployed worldwide, you can't control what states do with it. This fight is theater pretending governance works.
What To Do
If you're using Claude at scale, assume governments will find ways to use it—design for that reality anyway.
