Andy Jassy says Amazon’s Nvidia competitor chip is already a multibillion-dollar business
What Happened
Can any company, big or small, really topple Nvidia's AI chip dominance? Maybe not entirely, but Amazon is already making big bucks trying.
Our Take
Look, Amazon making billions off Trainium and Inferentia is real, but "Nvidia competitor"? Come on. They're not competing — they're doing what every hyperscaler does. Custom silicon for your own workloads is margin play, not threat.
Still, the numbers matter. You build once for your fleet, lock margins in, maybe sell others as afterthought. Nvidia owns the ecosystem. Amazon owns the infrastructure. These aren't the same game.
The real story isn't Amazon beating Nvidia. It's Amazon carving out a parallel market where Nvidia doesn't matter as much.
What To Do
For inference workloads at scale, benchmark Trainium/Inferentia costs against Nvidia's; Amazon's advantage is fleet-specific, not universal.
