Amazon is reportedly in talks to invest $50B in OpenAI
What Happened
If a deal materializes, it would mean Amazon is backing competing startups in the race for AI supremacy.
Our Take
This is wild because Amazon already owns a chunk of Anthropic *and* they're tight with Google Cloud. Now they want to back OpenAI too? The message is clear: Amazon doesn't trust any single horse. Which is smart (portfolio hedging), but also pathetic (shows no confidence in their own AWS AI story). If the deal closes, expect Azure and GCP to do the exact same thing. Nobody's winning this race — they're just buying optionality with other people's billions. The winner will be whoever makes the LLM useful first, not whoever has the most partnerships.
What To Do
Keep your infrastructure flexibility high — assume cloud providers will play musical chairs with AI vendors for the next 3 years.
