welcome gemma just means another giant dumped into the sandbox to try and steal market share. it's huge, sure, but it's just another open-source play against the walled gardens. gemma 2b and 7b are competent enough for most internal applications, but don't expect it to replace fine-tuned proprietary models for mission-critical tasks. the real value here isn't the raw parameter count; it's the community support and the sheer volume of fine-tuning we can do without paying insane API costs to OpenAI.

it proves that you don't need a trillion-dollar budget to build decent foundation models anymore. it just means the competition is getting exponentially better, which forces us to be smarter about deployment, not just model selection.
