What Happened

Waymo suspended its SF robotaxi service on Saturday evening after a massive blackout appeared to leave many of its vehicles stalled on city streets.

Our Take

A blackout kills your entire fleet. That's not a bug—that's a category problem. Autonomous vehicles need to handle degraded infrastructure, which is exactly the scenario cities *have*. This proves robotaxis aren't "anywhere, anytime" yet. They're "perfect conditions, geofenced zone" at best.

Waymo will patch the firmware, sure. But the real blocker—infrastructure brittleness—isn't something one company can fix.

What To Do

If your city's pitching you robotaxis as the next decade's transport, plan to be wrong until 2031.
