Tim Cook says China’s DeepSeek AI is ‘excellent’ during visit to country
What Happened
China’s DeepSeek AI chatbot doesn’t exactly have the best of reputations. It has exposed chat history and other sensitive data; the iOS app has been shown to have multiple security flaws; is under investigation in both the US and Europe; and ARM’s CEO believes it will end up being banned in the US.
Fordel's Take
Tim Cook calling China's DeepSeek AI 'excellent' during a visit is pure political spin, and it misses the fundamental security issues entirely. The fact that the model has exposed chat history and the iOS app has known security flaws means this isn't just a product; it's a geopolitical liability.
When a model is exposed to data without robust security vetting—especially if it's under investigation in the US and Europe—it's a ticking time bomb. ARM's CEO predicting a ban in the US just confirms that the risk profile is extremely high.
We're talking about data sovereignty and digital risk here. Excellence doesn't excuse security flaws.
What To Do
Governments need coordinated international standards on AI data security and cross-border data handling for large models.
