Shopify says AI traffic is up 7x since January, AI-driven orders are up 11x
What Happened
Shopify is bullish on AI-powered shopping agents, citing AI as an "incredible tool" to enable more entrepreneurs and calling it the "biggest shift in technology since the internet" during its third-quarter earnings call.
Our Take
Honest gut take: this is the first AI statistic I actually believe. 11x on orders (not just traffic) means real conversions, not vanity metrics. AI shopping agents work because checkout's standardized, merchants have real inventory data, and the transaction path is clear.
Shopify's right that this is the biggest shift since the internet (hyperbole aside, it tracks for e-commerce). But here's the catch: 7x from January was probably from a *tiny* baseline. If 0.01% of traffic was AI-driven in December, 7x gets you to 0.07%. Still noise.
Still, this is where AI actually drives ROI. Not chatbots answering FAQs. Agents that close deals.
What To Do
If you're building for e-commerce, agent-based checkout is table stakes now.
