OpenAI launches new agentic coding model only minutes after Anthropic drops its own
What Happened
The new model is built to accelerate the capabilities of Codex, the agentic coding tool OpenAI launched earlier this week.
Our Take
Two major vendors shipping agentic coding models within minutes of each other isn't a coincidence—it's a race to irrelevance if both are just iterating on the same thing.
Codex is just autocomplete on steroids. Real agentic coding means handling long-horizon tasks, debugging its own output, and maintaining state across edits. Incremental speed bumps on existing tooling don't change the game. Look at what Claude Code is actually doing versus what these new models claim.
The announcement timing is pure marketing theater. Whoever ships it second just looks desperate.
What To Do
Test both models on a 30-minute refactor task with error recovery, not just code generation speed.
