The author went from furious to "slightly less mad," which means there's something defensible here. But slightly less bad is still bad. Using AI to synthesize lost Welles footage is artistically dishonest, even if the intent is conservation. You're not restoring—you're faking. It'll look wrong. Fans will know it's synthetic.
Welles didn't want studio edits to his work. Why's AI any different?
What To Do
Don't use AI to complete historical films—commission human directors for sequels instead, or leave the work unfinished.
