How much of the AI data center boom will be powered by renewable energy?

What Happened

According to a new report from the International Energy Agency, the world will spend $580 billion on data centers this year — $40 billion more than will be spent finding new oil supplies.

Our Take

Spending $580B on data centers but only $540B on oil exploration is wild—until you remember those data centers still run on actual grid power (mostly gas).

Here's the thing: we're adding what, 15 GW of AI compute annually? That's not getting solar panels. It's natural gas plants spinning up overnight because nobody's waiting for wind farm permits. The IEA's probably just highlighting the investment gap, not saying renewable magically covers it.

Real story: hyperscalers are buying land next to dams and nuclear plants. That's where margins live. Renewable energy powering the boom is the narrative; grid physics is the reality.

What To Do

Track where major hyperscalers are building next—if it's near hydro or nuclear, the "renewable" story's just PR.
