Google is testing how to make it easier to move from search to an AI chat in a new global test.

Our Take

Gut: Google's merging AI Overviews and AI Mode because they're cannibalizing each other. It's a duct-tape fix for a strategy problem.

Chat and search solve different cognitive tasks. Merging breaks both. But shareholders want "AI everywhere," so Google's smooshing them into one flow anyway. It'll be clunky. Users hate UX compromises.

What To Do

When adding AI to existing products, commit to one user flow and own the tradeoffs—don't fork the experience.
