Google Maps now lets you access Gemini while walking and cycling
What Happened
When you're walking around and navigating with Maps, you can now ask Gemini questions like "What neighborhood am I in?" or "What are top-rated restaurants nearby?"
Our Take
Honestly? This is clever UX theater. You're already in Maps, you already see restaurants—adding Gemini saves what, three taps? But here's the thing: Google's embedding their LLM everywhere, and now they know exactly which neighborhoods you're curious about and which restaurants caught your eye. That's the real win.
The feature itself helps maybe 2% of navigation moments. Most people won't touch it. But the infrastructure—agentic assistants in every Google property—that's the actual product. Maps, Search, Android, Gmail. Observation points everywhere.
Useful features are cover for data collection.
What To Do
Assume your location patterns are feeding Google's agentic training now.
