Google Maps is getting an AI ‘Ask Maps’ feature and upgraded ‘immersive’ navigation
What Happened
The tech giant says the "Immersive Navigation" launch is the biggest update to Maps in over a decade.
Our Take
Another 'AI' feature that's really just a chatbot wrapper around existing data. Google's been refining Maps for 20 years—the routing engine's solid, the traffic data's solid. Immersive view was cool but barely used. Now they're bolting on a chat interface and calling it the biggest update in a decade. Come on.
You're still getting the same routing engine, same 2-3 destination options. The 'AI' is just Gemini rephrasing what Maps already knew. It'll help? Sure. Transformative? No. Feature theater.
The real win is UX—people might actually ask Maps questions instead of tapping around. But that's not an AI breakthrough. Most people are fine with the current interface.
What To Do
Don't plan your product around 'we'll add chat later'—design the core experience first.
