Google launches sub-$5 AI Plus plan in India to compete with ChatGPT Go
What Happened
For new users in India, Google is offering an AI Plus subscription for ₹199 ($2.21) for the first six months, after which you'll have to pay ₹399 ($4.44).
Our Take
This is a price war move, nothing else. Google's throwing ₹199 at India because they're terrified users get comfortable with ChatGPT first. Impulse-buy pricing is smart, but here's the thing: converting trial users to paid isn't the hard part. Retention after the discount jumps 2x is. If they haven't built something genuinely better than ChatGPT, those users evaporate the moment they hit the higher price. Google's betting on switching costs that don't exist yet.
The real test is whether they're running India-specific training or just repackaging commodity access. If it's the latter, this is loss-leader desperation, not strategy.
What To Do
Check if Google's including any India-specific model optimization or if they're purely competing on subsidized access.
