Gmail debuts a personalized AI Inbox, AI Overviews in search, and more
What Happened
Gmail is also bringing several AI features that were previously available only to paid users to all users.
Our Take
Google's shipping Inbox features they should've had two years ago. Except here's the play: they're forcing everyone into the AI product at once. That's not generosity; it's optics. They're trying to look like they're leading on AI when really they're just making Gmail less of a dumpster fire.
Problem is, AI in commodity products is defensive tech, not offensive. You can't charge more for a better inbox. This is Google trying to keep what they have, not grab new ground. Compare that to OpenAI actually creating new categories.
What To Do
If your product is a commodity, AI is a tax on competitiveness, not a moat.
