↗What Happened
Personal Intelligence is off by default, as users have the option to choose if and when they want to connect their Google apps to Gemini.
Our Take
Google's finally shipping the integration play everyone wanted (Gmail, Photos, Docs in one context). But here's the thing — it's off by default, which means adoption'll stall for 6 months minimum.
"Off by default" is corporate cover-your-ass, not good UX. Users won't flip the switch unless they're power users, and power users don't need the help.
When Google forces this on later (they will), the privacy backlash is predictable. They're borrowing against that goodwill now.
What To Do
Test with early adopters only. Don't build retention strategies around default adoption yet.
