Gemini starts rolling out to Android Auto globally
What Happened
Gemini will replace Google Assistant and give drivers the ability to make playlists, access email, and learn about a city — all through voice.
Our Take
Voice in cars is overdue, fine. But Gemini on Android Auto is feature creep wrapped in convenience. Playlists and email while driving? That's distraction with Google's name on it. They're betting that liability doesn't stick if the feature's baked into the OS, not a third-party app. Look, voice is safer than typing—but only if you're actually keeping eyes on the road. The moment someone's getting email summaries at 70 mph, Google's risk calculus changes. This'll go fine until it doesn't.
What To Do
Audit your car UX for whether features increase cognitive load while driving, not just whether they're 'hands-free'.
