A new AI lab called Flapping Airplanes launched yesterday, and a Sequoia partner has an interesting take on why they stand out.

Our Take

New AI lab from Sequoia — 'research-driven AI' is the pitch. Without knowing specifics, I'm skeptical of yet another lab claiming research purity while backed by VCs who need exits. That said, if they're actually shipping research (not just papers), it's worth watching.

The trend of 'let's step back and do real research' usually means 'last round of AI hype got oversaturated.' Could be legit, could be repositioning. Need to see what they actually release.
