Elon Musk says Tesla’s restarted Dojo3 will be for ‘space-based AI compute’
What Happened
Tesla aims to restart work on Dojo3, its previously abandoned third-generation AI chip. Only this time, Dojo3 won’t be aimed at training self-driving models on Earth. Instead, Musk says it will be dedicated to “space-based AI compute.”
Our Take
This is peak Musk. He's pivoting hardware that was supposed to train autopilot (dead project) into "space-based AI compute" (meaningless vaporware). It's a press release masquerading as strategy.
Dojo3 can't even compete with Nvidia's current generation on Earth. Putting it in space solves what exactly? Latency? Satellites have 100ms+ RTT. Power efficiency? Space hardware costs $50k per kg. What it actually is: he needed a way to explain why Dojo2 flopped.
What To Do
Tesla's real AI bet is still the camera stack and on-device inference, not training infrastructure.
