DoorDash launches a new ‘Tasks’ app that pays couriers to submit videos to train AI
What Happened
Delivery couriers will be able to earn money by completing activities like filming everyday tasks or recording themselves speaking in another language.
Our Take
This is brilliant and slightly dystopian. They're crowdsourcing training data from people who need $20. From their perspective, cheaper, more diverse data than annotation studios. From the courier's side, honest side hustle money while you're sitting in your car anyway.
The language recording part is particularly smart — live translation is expensive, so they're buying raw audio at scale. It works because both parties win financially.
But it sets a precedent: "we'll pay you to train our AI" becomes the new gig economy baseline.
What To Do
If you're building AI products, DoorDash just showed you how to crowdsource training data dirt cheap.
