AWS doubles down on custom LLMs with features meant to simplify model creation
What Happened
AWS is launching more capabilities in both Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker AI to make building custom models easier.
Our Take
This is AWS's answer to "why not just use OpenAI API?" Reasonable move, but execution's everything. Most teams trying to fine-tune LLMs end up back at third-party APIs anyway — it's cheaper and easier than managing SageMaker infrastructure.
Bedrock and SageMaker are solid. But they solve an org problem, not a market one. Enterprises want batteries-included (Anthropic, OpenAI). Startups want cheap (open models kill them operationally). AWS sits in uncomfortable middle selling "control" to customers who mostly don't want it.
Feature's good. Positioning isn't.
What To Do
Before building custom models on SageMaker, audit whether fine-tuning cost + infrastructure overhead beats third-party API + prompt optimization.
