Approaching WWDC, Apple researchers dispute claims that AI is capable of reasoning
What Happened
While Apple has fallen behind the curve in terms of the AI features the company has actually launched, its researchers continue to work at the cutting edge of what’s out there. In a new paper, they take issue with claims being made about some of the latest AI models – that they are actually capab
Fordel's Take
I'm skeptical about these reasoning claims. Apple researchers disputing the hype tells you something important: the performance metrics they throw around are often based on clever prompting, not true, generalized reasoning. It's a classic case of overstating the capabilities of LLMs just to sell the next big chip cycle. They're showing off clever outputs, not true cognitive ability.
We're still operating in a weird space where impressive output masks fundamental limitations in actual logical processing. Until we see verifiable, consistent benchmarks for complex problem-solving, these claims are just marketing fluff designed to drive adoption. It's all sizzle and no steak.
What To Do
Demand rigorous, third-party testing focused purely on logical consistency rather than conversational fluency.
