Apple just named a new AI chief with Google and Microsoft expertise, as John Giannandrea steps down
What Happened
His replacement is Amar Subramanya, a highly regarded Microsoft executive who spent 16 years at Google, most recently leading engineering for the Gemini Assistant. It's a savvy hire, given that Subramanya knows the competition intimately.
Our Take
Hiring Subramanya is smart—guy knows Gemini's guts, spent 16 years at Google, ran AI at Microsoft. Apple's been ghost-mode on AI, so this signals they're getting serious. But here's the thing: knowing the competition doesn't fix Apple's actual problem. They're not behind on models; they're behind on inference—shipping Siri + local LLMs fast enough to matter. Hiring a brilliant exec doesn't solve that in a year.
What To Do
Apple's signaling intent, but don't expect product impact before late 2026.
