What Happened

Anthropic announced this week a major update for Claude, its AI chatbot. The platform can now search for results on the web in real time to provide up-to-date information, making it even more useful for research. more…

Fordel's Take

Claude 3.5 Sonnet now hits the web before answering, pulling live pages instead of stopping at its April 2024 knowledge wall. Anthropic flips the default: every prompt routes through a Bing search unless you toggle it off.

RAG pipelines that spent weeks wiring Bing or Brave APIs just lost their moat. If your retrieval layer still calls Haiku for $0.25 per 1M tokens and then pays another 1¢ per Bing query, you’re double-charging yourself for latency. Running Opus for simple classification is just burning money.

Teams shipping Q&A on 2024 data can junk their crawler stack and ship today. Anyone locked in air-gapped or pre-2024 compliance can ignore this; Claude’s toggle keeps search off by default.

What To Do

Drop your Bing API key and hit Claude 3.5 Sonnet’s web toggle instead of stacking Haiku + Bing because it cuts 250 ms and one paid API call per user question
