What Happened

Amazon is bringing Alexa+ to the web with a new Alexa.com site, expanding its AI assistant beyond devices and positioning it as a family-focused, agent-style chatbot.

Our Take

Amazon's desperate to catch up to ChatGPT and Claude on the web. Alexa+ on the web makes sense as a distribution play, but here's the thing — Alexa was never great at understanding what you actually wanted. It's optimized for smart home commands and shopping, not nuanced conversation.

Positioning it as 'family-focused' is corporate speak for 'we're avoiding the hard problems of general-purpose AI.' What Amazon really wants is your data piping through their ecosystem, tied to Prime, advertising, and AWS. The web chat is just the trojan horse.

What To Do

Don't expect Alexa.com to replace ChatGPT — expect it to replace Alexa's app screen as a shopping interface.
