What Happened

AWS has been building its own AI chips — and systems — for years now. It just released its third version, known as Trainium3, with some impressive specs.

Our Take

Custom silicon is the endgame for scale and Amazon finally has a chip that might matter. Trainium3's got solid specs, and AWS is being smart about it—Nvidia-friendly so customers don't feel locked in.

This is how infrastructure evolves: big players build custom iron to own their cost structure, then eventually sell it as a service. AWS's doing both.

It won't dethrone GPUs but it doesn't need to—it just needs to be cheaper at scale.

What To Do

If you're running training jobs at scale, ask your AWS rep about Trainium pricing vs. GPU—the gap might be worth the switch.
