What Happened

A new report claims the e-commerce giant is looking to create a pipeline of licensable content between media publishers and AI companies.

Our Take

Amazon wants to be the middleman between publishers and AI training. Sounds useful until you remember Amazon always takes a cut.

Publishers are getting scraped into oblivion — having *some* way to monetize beats zero. So this could actually move the needle. But don't mistake it for a solution. It's rent-seeking dressed up as infrastructure. Amazon provides the pipes, publishers get scraps, AI companies get content, and Amazon keeps the spread.

The real question: will publishers actually use it, or will they negotiate directly once they realize the leverage they have? And if Amazon does all the deal-making, they know everyone's contract terms. That's a lot of power.

It's not bad, it's just not as good as publishers might think.

What To Do

If you're a publisher, don't use Amazon's marketplace without negotiating direct licensing first — they'll know your terms and cut their own better deals.
