AI-powered apps struggle with long-term retention, new report shows
What Happened
AI can drive stronger early monetization for apps, but sustaining value remains the challenge, RevenueCat's latest report finds.
Our Take
Of course they do. Every startup in 2024 bolted an AI chatbot onto something and called it a product—novelty can't sustain engagement. Retention comes from *irreplaceable workflows*, not feature toys.
RevenueCat's right: early monetization happens because people are curious (curiosity tax). But that dries up fast. Without data, integrations, or domain expertise that beats ChatGPT, you're just GPT in a UI. And nobody pays for that twice.
The apps surviving are the ones solving specific problems—not generic AI wrappers.
What To Do
If your AI app's retention curve flattens after month 2, you've built a feature, not a product—rebuild with domain moat or die.
