The deal’s purpose is primarily to acquire talent, aka an acqui-hire, adding nine key Cleanlab employees to Handshake’s research organization.
Our Take
Acquiring teams instead of traction = stagnation signal. When you're not growing, you buy for people, not product.
Cleanlab wasn't on a hockey stick. Handshake wasn't either. Data labeling is commoditizing fast—there's less moat every quarter. So you pick up the talent and hope it moves your needle faster than hiring.
It probably won't.
What To Do
Data labeling as a standalone business is disappearing—either get acquired young or pivot to higher-margin work.
