AI data center boom could be bad news for other infrastructure projects
What Happened
Improvements to roads, bridges, and other infrastructure could take a hit as data center construction accelerates.
Our Take
AI data centers are vacuuming up capital, real estate, and grid capacity. Meanwhile, roads are crumbling, bridges are failing, transit projects get shelved. This isn't a coincidence.
Data centers are profitable, predictable, and they attract venture capital at scale. Fixing a highway is unglamorous, slow, and doesn't yield VC returns. So we're choosing. We're building the infrastructure for AI while cities literally fall apart.
Five years from now, we'll have incredible compute capacity and third-world road conditions in rich countries. That's not a trade-off anyone explicitly made—it's just what happens when one investment looks like the future and the other looks like maintenance.
What To Do
Push your local government to require data center construction to fund regional infrastructure projects—at least make someone pay for the opportunity cost.
