a16z-backed super PAC is targeting Alex Bores, sponsor of New York’s AI safety bill — he says bring it on
What Happened
A super PAC backed by Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI, and other tech leaders has targeted New York Assembly member Alex Bores' congressional campaign, marking its first attack against a lawmaker supporting AI regulation.
Our Take
a16z and OpenAI literally funding a super PAC to attack a guy pushing AI regulation. The irony is so thick you could cut it. 'Free markets, let's see what happens'—but only if what happens is what we want.
This is anticompetitive bullshit dressed up as idealism. Want to argue against regulation? Make your case. But silencing your opponents with a super PAC is the opposite of the libertarian rhetoric they're constantly throwing around.
The worst part? It'll probably work. Politicians are cheap. But it also galvanizes the exact people who might've been on the fence about regulation. Stupid tactical move from supposedly smart money.
What To Do
Watch who funds opposition to AI regulation—it'll tell you everything about who actually worries about the downside of their own products.
