A ‘pound of flesh’ from data centers: one senator’s answer to AI job losses

What Happened

Fears of AI-driven job loss are growing fast, and they’re fueling backlash against data centers. Sen. Mark Warner suggests taxing them to help workers survive the transition.

Our Take

Warner's not wrong that job displacement is real—it's just that taxing data centers solves nothing. It's political theater. You can't tax your way out of structural change.

The real problem's reskilling. Workers who lose jobs to automation need pathways into new work, not a band-aid tax that data centers pass through to customers anyway. It's feel-good policy that does nothing for the people it's supposed to help.

If you actually cared about the transition, you'd fund community colleges and apprenticeships, not penalize infrastructure.

What To Do

Reskilling beats taxation.
