A new test for AI labs: Are you even trying to make money?
What Happened
It’s getting hard to tell which AI labs are actually trying to make money. We created a rating system to help sort it out.
Our Take
Gut: Most labs are cash furnaces. OpenAI prints money, Anthropic's improving, everyone else's betting on dominance. A rating system's useful but it's admitting we can't tell who survives by looking. The real test isn't "making money" - it's "can make money?" Completely different.
Most won't matter. Get acquired, shut down, pivoted. What matters is cash velocity - research to revenue speed. That's the tell.
Honestly? A rating system's just telling you what the smart money already knows. These labs survive or die based on whether they can turn research into revenue faster than they burn cash.
What To Do
If you're picking an AI vendor, they need $100M+ funding minimum - below that, assume acquisition or shutdown in 18 months.
